Our March chapter meeting was held at Pond Branch Airport (PBA) on March 23, 2014. We had a fun day in a relaxed atmosphere with lots of good conversation and comradeship. Thanks to Eddie and Sandy Price for their hospitality and willingness to hold the event there. The main course was Beaufort Stew (aka Shrimp Boil, Shrimp Bog, Frogmore Stew) consisting of shrimp, kilbasa (polish sausage), red potatoes, and corn. We also had chicken salad (for those who could not eat seafood) and several desserts. Leonard Self demonstrated a unique flying machine. We held a short business meeting after the meal. The weather forecast had been rather dismal prior to the meeting, but it actually turned out to be a rather nice day. Al Strickland braved the elements and flew his nice Savage aircraft in early. Later in the day, Phil flew his "Tweety Bird" Sky Ranger in, and Neil flew by in the twin Apache. Two sets of photos were taken. February Meeting - Hamilton-Owens Airport (CUB) - 2/16/2014

February 16, 2014 Meeting     Ken Berry & Cantzon Foster Hangar at CUB

We had a wonderful February meeting at Hamilton-Owens Airport (CUB). It was one of our best meetings to date. Host, Kenneth Berry, assisted by his mother, Virginia Berry, invited us over for a lunch of spaghetti, tossed salad, garlic bread, iced tea, and coffee. Members and guests brought various delicious desserts. Ken had also invited some other guests, so we were able to meet some really nice people, including Kenneth's hangar mate, Cantzon Foster. Cantzon heads up the SC Historical Aviation Foundation (SCHAF) located at CUB and currently housed in their hangar. During lunch, Brian Steed, owner of S&S Aviation and FBO at KFDW, gave us an interesting presentation on ADS/B. Then, Scott Linaberry made a presentation on renovation plans for the Curtis-Wright Hangar located at CUB built in 1929. It's literally a part of aviation history in this area, and even nationally. Plans are to convert it into a restaurant/lounge, while still preserving its historical heritage. We also enjoyed seeing the displays inside Ken's and Cantzon's hangar, which included a B-25 aircraft (owned by SCHAF); it crash landed into local Lake Greenwood back in 1944 and was salvaged in 1983. There was also a Norden bombsight (the second biggest secret of WWII only behind the atomic bomb), Sperry bombsight, and various other WWII paraphenalia. A few of us hung around late in the afternoon and were able to visit and take some photos of the Curtis-Wright Hangar. We thank Ken and all the good folks who attended for showing us a great time. We also welcomed back 3 former members.  To view photos of the event, click either of the thumbnails above.

January Meeting - Pelion Airport (6J0) - 1/12/2014

Millie Receives 2013 Award

Our first chapter meeting of the new year was held on January 12, 2014 at Pelion Airport (6J0). Libby and Randy provided a meal of chili with cheese sprinkles, sour cream, oyster crackers and iced tea, with soft drinks compliments of Leonard Self. Several members brought desserts. We were a bit late starting the meeting and had lunch in the terminal building. After lunch, we moved to the EMT substation next door for the business meeting in which president, Randy Berry, heartily welcomed everyone to a brand new year of fun and activities and welcomed several guests and new member, Joey Jeffcoat. Secretary/Treasurer, Libby Berry, read the minutes from our last meeting in November, 2013 and gave the treasurer's report. Libby and Randy reported that we now have online access to our chapter bank account, and we have ample funds for our future chapter activities, even after payment of 2014 EAA dues and liability insurance, which Randy indicated he had mailed in early January, along with the necessary forms. Randy then covered the results of the surveys he had sent out back in November. Only 8 surveys were returned, but the consensus seemed to be that those who responded were well satisfied with the chapter, 7 of which were in the 8-10 range (10 being the highest), and only 1 in the 5-6 (medium) range. Randy then made awards to the other 2013 chapter leaders: Officers (VP-Tony Gantt, Treasurer-Joe Garner, Secretary-Libby Berry), technical & flight counselor (Neil Deye), Young Eagles Coordinator (Millie Hoemer), and Safety Advisor (Don Schmotzer). After the business meeting, Don Schmotzer gave a very informative presentation on "cold weather flying", which reminded us of the hazards associated with winter flying.  The meeting ended around 3:45pm, which left plenty of time for flying afterwards.
