April Meeting - Pond Branch Airport - 4/21/2013

Ribs Off Eddie's Weber Grill

Our April meeting was hosted by Eddie and Sandy Price at Pond Branch Airport (PBA) on April 21st, 2013. They served "fall off the bone" ribs smoked on the Weber grill, BBQ, green beans, potato salad, corn, slaw, iced tea, soft drinks and other delicious dishes. Myra Strock and Libby Berry brought their famous banana puddings, and several other members brought desserts as well. We held our business meeting just after 2pm in which major topics were the very successful Young Eagles event on Saturday, our upcoming fly-in at Gilbert Airpark on June 8th (alternate date June 15th), and a planned BBQ/fly-in at Wexford Airpark in September. We also touched on the planned fall fly-in at Gaston Airport in October (no date set yet) and several other upcoming events (see below). Afterwards, several people walked down the runway to the beaver pond for exercise. Then, we all had a relaxed time just sitting around and chatting. Thanks Eddie and Sandy for great food and a wonderful time. For photos, click the icon above.

Young Eagles Day - Pelion Airport - 4/20/2013

Young Eagles Certificate

Fifty-one (51) kids, their parents, county sheriff's staff, and EAA chapter members converged upon Lexington County at Pelion Airport (6J0) early Saturday morning (4/20/2013) to give the kids the opportunity to fly in a real airplane, thus qualifying them to become EAA "Young Eagles". We were concerned Friday night that weather conditions might cancel the event, but Saturday morning turned out reasonably nice by about 8:00am. Young Eagles Coordinators, Millie Hoemer (EAA 1467) and Ron Shelton (EAA 242) started immediately registering kids around 8:00am ... Millie and Neil Deye in the county facilities next door, Ron, Libby Berry, Leon Strock in the airport terminal building, and several sheriff's staff in both locations.  After the appropriate paperwork was completed for each kid, EAA Chapter 1467 pilots (Don Schmotzer, Don Bledsoe, Eddie Price, Randy Berry), EAA Chapter 242 pilots (David Nieves, Paul Carter, Allen Folger), and CFI Harry Bose carried the kids aloft and transformed them into Young Eagles. Each Young Eagle received a certificate like the one above. Sheriff's personnel and parents were very appreciative of our efforts, and the pilots enjoyed the experience as well ... and certainly, the kids did. Other chapter members assisting were Ron Lindsey (ramp access control) and Merritt Milano (plane ground operations), as well as numerous county sheriff's staff and parents. Later, we all enjoyed a lunch of hotdogs, chips, desserts and soft drinks in the county facilities next door. Thank you all for your support, a great time, and a successful event! March Meeting - Wexford Airpark - 3/17/2013

Don & Eddie at Wexford Airpark

Our chapter met at Wexford Airpark on Sunday, March 17th, 2013. Leonard, Kathy and David Self were great hosts and provided a wonderful lunch of black bean chili (two pots - one mild & one spicy), delicious cornbread, tea & lemonade, and cut-up fruit & brownies for dessert. Libby brought a cherry yum-yum dessert too. 18 chapter members attended along with 5 guests. Bob Bennett also attended from Wexford Airpark, and Tom Butler drove up later on his golf cart to meet us. Unfortunately, the day was windy and gusty (10-15mph with gusts reported up to 25mph), so most members chose to drive in. However, Don Bledsoe and Joe Garner braved the winds and flew in from Gaston Airport in Don's nice C172, and Eddie Price did the same from PBA in his C140. We were also honored to see Gerald Ballard and his son (Gerald, Jr.) fly their beautiful Beechcraft Baron in from Twin Lakes Airpark and have them attend our meeting. After lunch, we held our business meeting in which we had a trip report and announced a number of upcoming events. We also reached a unanimous decision as to when and where to have our fly-ins this year ... one at Gaston Airport (2SC8) in October, a Cessna fly-in at Hamilton-Owens Airport (KCUB) in coordination with EAA242 in October, one at Gilbert Airpark in early June (pending approval by GIA Association), and perhaps one at some yet unspecified location and time. Eddie Price volunteered to hold the April chapter meeting at his Pond Branch Airport  (PBA) featuring "ribs on the Weber grill", which was well received.  For photos, click the thumbnail above.
