July Meeting - 7/15/2012

Ken, Jim, Others Cooking Lunch 7-15-12

Our July meeting was held on Sunday, July 15th at Lexington County at Pelion Airport (6J0). Special thanks go to Ken Berry and his girlfriend, Rhea,  who served old timey country sausages on huge homemade buns complete with peppers and onions. They also provided tables and chairs for the meeting. Thanks also to others who supplemented and assisted with the lunch: Jim, Glenn, Leon, Tony.  Larry Yon kicked off the meeting with a presentation on the SC Historical Aviation Foundation (SCHAF). SCHAF owns the B-25 at Hamilton-Owens and needs donations to continue it's fine work preserving this piece of WWII history. Although Larry's presentation was for a serious and worthy cause, he put a humorous spin on the story behind how the B-25 ended up in Lake Greenwood back in 1944. After lunch, we held our business meeting and decided several key issues, involving Young Eagles and our upcoming fall fly-in. Afterwards, we had an interesting presentation by Steve Preston on the upcoming AirVenture Fly-in at Oshkosh, Wisconsin (July 23-29). Steve has been there most every year since 1999. Several members are going this year: Steve, Randy, Ray, Ken, Larry, Tony, Chris. We should have some interesting tales (some of them true) upon our return. Although we were a bit cramped in the terminal building, at least it was air conditioned, and we had fun. Eddie Price took plenty of photos too. To view them, click the thumbnail at top.

Greenwood County Fly-in - 6/23/2012

Greenwood County Fly-in

Ten of our members (Phil, Neil, Millie, Larry, Tony, Chris, Jim, Don S, Fred and Randy) attended the Greenwood County Fly-in (KGRD) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 in seven aircraft; one member (Chris) drove. The fly-in was well organized and well attended. It included something for every one ... planes, rotorcraft, remote control (RC) aircraft, antique automobiles, airplane rides, food and various displays. The weather was generally gorgeous, although very hot. The food was good too. In fact, pilots who flew in were rewarded with a free meal ticket.  For photos of the event, click the thumbnail above.

Gilbert Airpark Fly-in - 6/9/2012

Gilbert Airpark Fly-in 2012

The Gilbert Airpark Fly-in jointly sponsored by our EAA chapter and the Gilbert Airpark Association on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 was a great success.  We don't yet have an accurate count on the number of people attending (although a roster was circulated), but twenty-one (21) planes attended.  The weather was beautiful and, according to all reports, everyone had a wonderful time. The food was excellent with a main course of 6-ounce hamburgers with all the fixings, all beef hotdogs with homemade chili, baked beans, chips, macaroni salad, mixed fruit, various delicious desserts, soft drinks and tea. Thanks to all of you who assisted. Special thanks to hangar host, Ron Angerman, and guest speaker, Ed Fisher, of Raceair Designs and Whiteplains Airpark. Ed has designed and built many planes, several of which have won major awards at AirVenture in the past. He plans to unveil his latest design at AirVenture 2012.
